I’m back! And if you’re reading this then you’ve stuck around and I thank you for that! Now, let’s get down to business (but not to defeat the Huns).

San Diego isn’t exactly known for it’s culinary achievements. If your average person, myself included, were to think of the cities in the US with the best food it’d probably look something like NY, LA, SF (even though this is one that wouldn’t make it on my list, sorry!), and the rest would vary highly dependent upon wherever one has been though I’m sure NOLA, Denver, some other cities with cool acronyms, and maaaaaaybe SD. But, I will say, what we do have, we are awesome at. Mexican food? No contest. Don’t trust anyone who says otherwise. Seriously, don’t, they obviously have terrible judgement when it comes to food. Seafood? Probably the best quality at the best price especially compared to the price ranges for all the other cities I listed. One more thing I bet you didn’t know we had? ICE CREAM. I mean, what else would you expect from a city that has perfect weather year round?

Allow me to introduce you to Oasis. It’s a small mom and pop shop that’s in a strip mall practically a stone’s throw away from the border, but it’s the best ice cream SD has to offer. Pass on Hammond’s and Moo Time and whatever other places you were planning on going and go directly to Mexico. Just kidding, don’t go that far, stop about three exits before that and you’ll end up in South San Diego. All the ingredients are fresh and they follow the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) rule, which I am a big fan of, if I haven’t already mentioned it. On a perfect sunny day in SD – which is about 360 days of the year – I don’t need orange zest and lavender aromas in my ice cream, I’m happy with mango or watermelon or, if you’re feeling funky, mango and cookies and cream! Don’t knock it, it’s a deliciously odd combination.

Eat your ice cream there this long weekend after having some fish tacos or a day at IB and don’t forget to bring cash; because what mom and pop place takes card? Talk to the owner, read the articles about them on the wall, and just sit back and enjoy your ice cream like you did when you were a kid.
